On August 7, 2024, Research.com released its third edition of the world's best universities report. The institutions on the list have the academic excellence, reputation, and flexibility to attract or develop some of the world's best scientists. This factor often eludes other popular rankings and is the primary driving force of this one, making this ranking unique.  

In the 2024 report, many of last year's leaders have continued to attract and develop esteemed scholars and encourage revolutionary research, thus retaining their positions in the ranking. Harvard University maintains its top spot as the world's best university while the United States once again has the highest number of ranking universities. Asia is the continent where most of the best universities are located.   

To produce this ranking, over 166,000 scientist profiles were evaluated, and various metrics and indicators were analyzed to determine each university's inclusion. 

Latest discoveries in research

This year, universities have made remarkable strides in scientific research, yielding significant discoveries across various disciplines. One of the most noteworthy advancements has been in quantum computing, where researchers have achieved breakthroughs in quantum error correction techniques. The United States is still the top country with the highest number of ranking universities with 576, increasing its total from last year's 559. Continuing its dominance in the academic world, the country is also home to nine of the top 10 universities and 15 of the top 20. 

The other countries with the highest number of top universities are China with 318 (up from 304 in 2023), Japan with 241 (up from 228), India with 212 (up from 189), and the United Kingdom with 130 (up from 129).

Asia is the continental leader in housing the world's top universities with 1,295, upping its total from 1,031 last year. In the second spot is Europe with 818 (down from 822 in 2023) and North America comes in third with 667 (up from 639). 

However, when it comes to the quality of entries, North America is at the top. The world region has nine of the top 10 universities and 16 of the top 20. 

In North America, the countries with the highest number of top universities are the United States with 576 and Canada with 60. 

China has the highest number of top universities in Asia with 318, followed by Japan with 241. 

The United Kingdom leads Europe with 130 universities, followed by France with 117. 

In South America, Brazil has the highest number of leading institutions with 75. 

Meanwhile, Australia leads the pack in Oceania with 42 universities.

Texas slides down to fourth with 39 (up from 38), and Massachusetts stays at the fifth spot with 29 (same as last year).

Harvard University is once again the world's and North America's top university, garnering an aggregate h-index of 224,482, significantly increasing its total from 197,552 in 2023. Completing the top five are Stanford University (105,524), the University of Oxford (78,049), the University of Washington (77,792), and the University of Pennsylvania (76,865). 

In Europe, the top university is the University of Oxford with an h-index of 78,049 and a world ranking of 3. 

In Asia, Tokyo University in Japan is the leading institution, garnering an h-index of 43,769. It is listed as 25th in the world ranking. 

The University of Melbourne, Australia, is the best university in Oceania with an h-index of 38,647 and a world ranking of 36. 

In South America, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, is the top university with an h-index of 14,828 and a world ranking of 144.

The University of Cape Town, South Africa, is the top university in Africa with an h-index of 6,311 and a world ranking of 341. 

In terms of having the highest number of top scientists, Harvard University leads the pack with 2,572, followed by Stanford University (1,384), the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor (1,151), the University of Washington (1,123), and the University of Oxford (1,112). 

The average H-index for the top 1% of universities is 2776.83 against an average of 659.38 for all universities included in the online ranking. 

Meanwhile, the average number of citations for the top 1% of universities is 910,963 against an average of 270,307 for all the top universities.
