The demand for counseling services in the West is driven by the prevalence of mental illness, with over 50 million adults in the US suffering from mental illness. In fact, the US had 6,622 mental health care health professional shortage areas in 2023, with only 27.2% of the mental health needs of residents in these areas being met. This shortage is particularly pronounced in the West, where many rural areas lack access to mental health services. As a result, counselors who are willing to work in these areas can make a real difference in the lives of their clients, and many of my colleagues have reported feeling a sense of purpose and fulfillment in their work.
