On April 19. 2024, Research.com published the 3rd edition of its best earth scientists ranking. This annual report includes an up-to-date list of the top researchers in earth science. It also seeks to encourage scientists and academics by enhancing their online presence and highlighting their contributions to the field.

We have reviewed nearly 8,000 profiles of the top earth science experts and compiled a summary of the most recent research findings for this 2024 report. A section also discusses how online education trends influence the collaboration between students, professionals, and scientists on research projects. This is an excellent opportunity to exchange the latest information on earth science research and gain insight into the future of scientific discoveries.

The D-index threshold for considering a scientist in our ranking was set to 30 if most of their publications were in earth science. Other criteria used in the ranking include the number of contributions in the discipline and the awards achieved by the scientist.

The year 2023 saw some earth science discoveries with broader global implications. One major finding was the record-low sea ice extent in Antarctica. This shrinking ice cap signifies an acceleration in polar ice melt, potentially leading to rising sea levels that could impact coastlines worldwide.

  • Scientists from the United States dominate the ranking, with 491 scholars included in 2024. This is 49.1% of the best earth scientists.
  • The other countries in the top 5 are the United Kingdom (96 scientists), Australia (75), Germany (54), and France (50).
  • Of the top 10 scientists this year, 4 are from the United States.
  • In the 2024 report, the California Institute of Technology leads the list of top 10 institutions with 23 scientists.
  • The top-ranking scientist in earth science is Christopher T. Russell from the University of California in the United States, with a D-index of 164.
  • U.S.-based institutions make up 13 of the top 20 leading institutions. Other leading universities come from Australia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, China, and Switzerland.
  • The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 139 against an average of 79 for all scientists included in the ranking.

BEST EARTH SCIENTISTS RANKING

Countries with the highest number of leading earth science scientists

The U.S. has the highest number of scientists in the best earth scientists report. The country has 491 scholars, down from 500 in our 2023 ranking.

The U.K. maintains its second-place ranking with 96 scientists, gaining two more scientists in the ranking.

The third spot was taken by Australia, which currently has 75 ranking scientists. France and Germany switched rankings, with Germany gaining four more scientists and climbing a notch to the fourth spot, while France moved to the fifth spot with 50 scientists.

China also moved to the sixth spot with 48 scientists, followed by Canada with 47 scientists, Switzerland with 27 scientists, the Netherlands with 23 scientists, and Japan with 18 scientists.

Both Germany and the Netherlands elected five more ranked scientists in 2024. All countries in the previous year’s top 10 are still included in the list.

Please note that the country associated with a scientist is based on their affiliated research institution, according to MAG, not on their actual nationality.

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists

The California Institute of Technology is the leading institution in our 2024 report, followed by  Stanford University. CalTech has an additional two scientists this year, with a total of 23 scientists. However, the number of Scientists from Stanford remained the same as the previous year at 21.

The Australian National University still holds the third spot with 19 scientists, while Utrecht University climbed from rank 7 in 2023 to rank 4 this year with 16 scientists. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), ranked 9th in 2023, holds the 5th spot this year with 16 scientists. 

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a new entrant in the top 10 and is at the sixth spot with 16 scientists. The University of Oxford follows with 15 scientists, ETH Zurich with 15 scientists, the University of California-Los Angeles with 14 scientists, and the University of Colorado-Boulder with 14 scientists.

Among the top 20 institutions, 13 are based in the US, including the three research agencies (USGS, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory). Other institutions in the top 20 are from Australia (Australian National University), the Netherlands (Utrecht University), Switzerland (ETH Zurich), and China (Chinese Academy of Sciences).

While traditional universities often spearhead Earth science research, online universities are increasingly playing a vital role through collaboration with established research institutions. In Asia, Professor Guochun Zhao from the University of Hong Kong, China is the leading scientist with a D-index of 135. Professor Zhao ranks 8th in our report.

In Europe, Professor Jean Poesen from KU Leuven, Belgium leads other scientists in this field. Professor Poesen has a D-index of 138 and ranks 5th in our report.

In Oceania, Professor William L. Griffin from Macquarie University, Australia is the leading scientist. Professor Griffin has a D-index of 139 and is this year's 2nd leading earth scientist.

In Africa, Professor Maarten J. de Wit from the Nelson Mandela University, South Africa is the top scientist. He leads other scientists with a D-index of 69.

The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 139 against an average of 79 for all scientists in the 2024 report.

The average number of published articles for the top 1% of scientists in the report is 1070.4 against an average of 354.05 for all scholars.

The average number of citations for the top 1% of scientists is 72,303.8 against an average of 24,249.03 for all scholars.
