World Online Ranking of Best Psychology Scientists – 2023 Report

On May 8, 2023, Research.com released the 2nd edition of the annual ranking for best scientists in the area of psychology. This report, which contains the list of leading scholars, is intended to offer the academic community more visibility and exposure to the influential research contributions made by those at the forefront of psychology.

What is more, we hope this report will inspire researchers, decision-makers, and entrepreneurs around the world to find out where leading experts are heading. It is a great opportunity for all of us to learn who are the leading experts in different research areas, in different countries, and within different universities and research institutions.

For the 2023 edition of the ranking, more than 8,600 scientist profiles on Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Graph have been examined, with several indicators and metrics reviewed to consider each scientist’s inclusion in the ranking.

The D-index threshold for approving a scholar to be considered was set to 30 if most of their publications were in the field of psychology. The inclusion criteria for scholars to be considered for the ranking of top scientists are based on the discipline D-index, the proportion of contributions made within the given discipline, and the awards and achievements of the scientists.

Psychology research at the forefront of solving societal problems

Some of the greatest challenges societies face today are mental health problems that affect not just adults but also young kids. At the forefront of addressing these challenges are the psychologists who are finding new ways to conduct research and provide clinical advice to those who need it.

• The other leading countries with leading positions in the ranking are the United Kingdom (117 scientists or 11.7%), the Netherlands (51 scientists or 5.1%), Canada (45 scientists or 4.5%), Australia (42 scientists or 4.2%), and Germany (33 scientists or 3.3%).
• Only three out of 10 scientists in the top 1% are from the United States.
• In the 2023 edition of our ranking, Harvard University still leads the ranking, with 30 scientists affiliated with that institution included in ranking.
• The top-ranking scientist in psychology is Trevor W. Robbins from the University of Cambridge in the U.K., with a D-index of 260.
• American universities constitute 70% of the 10 top leading institutions, with the other three institutions being based in the U.K.
• The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 205.6 against an average of 102.68 for all 1000 scientists included in the ranking.

Countries with the highest number of leading psychology scientists

Scientists from the United States dominate the list, with 641 scholars included in 2023, representing 64.1% of the whole ranking, a jump of 1.6% compared to last year. However, only 3 out of 10 scientists in the top 1% are from the United States this year.

The United Kingdom keeps its second spot from 2022, boasting of 117 scientists.

The Netherlands took the third spot in 2023, which currently has 51 ranking scientists, five scientists fewer than in the previous year.

We don't see any movement in the rankings of the next leading countries: Canada with 45 scientists, Australia with 42 scholars, Germany with 33 scientists, Italy with 12 scholars, and Belgium with 10 scientists.

This year's significant movers are Sweden, from the 9th to the 10th spot for the 2023 ranking and Switzerland, from the 10th to the 9th.

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists

In the 2023 edition of our ranking, Harvard University is the leader, with 30 scientists affiliated with the institution included in the ranking. Ranking second is King's College London with 27 scientists, and third place is occupied by Stanford University with 22 scholars.

American universities and institutions constitute 70% of the top 10 leading institutions, with the other three representing the U.K. (King's College London, University of Cambridge, and University of Oxford).

Of the top 1% of leading scientists, three out of 10 institutions are based in the U.S. Five institutions, including the top 3 spots, are from the U.K., and two are from Australia.

Harvard University retained its leadership in the top 10 institutions with 30 scientists. From 26 scientists in 2022, King’s College London also stayed in the 2nd spot with 27 scientists. Stanford University moved from 4th to 3rd spot with two scientists added to its previous total of 20. Reaching the top 10 for the first time is the University of Pennsylvania with 13 scientists, replacing the University of Pittsburg.

For Europe, Professor Trevor W. Robbins from the University of Cambridge, U.K., is on top of the list with a world ranking of no. 1 as well. His D-index is 260.

For North America, Professor Terrie E. Moffitt from Duke University, United States, is ranked first in the region, with a D-index of 202. She is also listed 4th in the world ranking.

For Oceania, Professor Richard M. Ryan from the Australian Catholic University, Australia, ranks 1st on our list of leading scientists in that region. He is also listed 6th in the world ranking with a D-index of 196.

Professor Michael Bond from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China, leads the top list in Asia with a world ranking of 465.

No scientists from Africa and South America were ranked among the top 1000 scientists in 2023.

The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 205.6 against an average of 102.68 for all 1000 scientists included in the ranking.

The scholar with the lowest index value who made it to the ranking in 2022 has a D-index of 80.

The average number of published articles for the top 1% of scientists in the ranking is 710.9 against an average of 385.9 for all 1000 scholars.
