On May 9, 2024, Research.com published the 3rd edition of its annual ranking of the finest scientists in psychology. This study, which includes a list of top scholars, is intended to give the academic community additional visibility and exposure to the influential contributions made by those at the forefront of psychology research.

For the 2024 edition of the ranking, more than 9,000 scientist profiles on Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Graph have been examined, with several indicators and metrics reviewed to consider each scientist’s inclusion in the ranking.
The D-index threshold for approving a scholar to be considered was set to 30 if most of their publications were in the field of psychology. The inclusion criteria for scholars to be considered for the ranking of top scientists are based on the discipline D-index, the proportion of contributions made within the given discipline, and the awards and achievements of the scientists.

Scientists from the United States dominate the list, with 642 scholars included in 2024, representing 64.2% of the whole ranking, with one more additional scientist compared to last year. However, only 4 out of 10 scientists in the top 1% are from the United States this year.
The United Kingdom keeps its second spot from 2023, with 118 scientists.
The Netherlands took the third spot in 2024, which currently has 50 ranking scientists, down from 51 scientists in the previous year.
Among the top 10 countries, 8 maintained their previous ranking except for Italy and Belgium. Italy moved a notch down to rank 8 with 10 scientists, while Belgium climbed to the 7th spot, also with 10 scientists.
The rest of the top 10 include Canada (47), Australia (42), Germany (33), Switzerland (8), and Sweden (7).

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists
In the 2024 edition of our ranking, Harvard University is the leader, with 30 scientists affiliated with the institution included in the ranking. Ranking second is King's College London, with 28 scientists; third place is occupied by the University of California, Los Angeles, with 23 scientists.
American universities and institutions constitute 70% of the top 10 leading institutions, with the other three representing the U.K. (King's College London, University of Cambridge, and University of Oxford).
Of the top 1% of leading scientists, four of 10 institutions are based in the U.S. Four institutions, including the top 2 spots, are from the U.K., and two are from Australia.
Harvard University retained its leadership in the top 10 institutions with 30 scientists. From 27 scientists in 2022, King’s College London maintained its place in the 2nd spot with 28 scientists.
The University of California-Los Angeles moved from the fourth to the third spot with 23 scientists, while Stanford University moved to the 4th spot with 22 scientists.
Reclaiming its place in the top 10 is the University of Pittsburg, ranking 10th in 2024 with 14 scientists.
