On May 13, 2024 Research.com released the third edition of our annual report on the best scientists in the field of microbiology. The key objective of this list is to raise awareness and appreciation in the academic community of the substantial research accomplishments of microbiology's leading researchers and scientists.

Furthermore, we hope this report will inspire academics, decision-makers, and entrepreneurs worldwide to investigate the various research areas that outstanding microbiologists are working on. Our report provides information on the best experts in various microbiology research topics across countries, universities, and research institutions.  

To compile the scientists for our 2024 report, our research team examined more than 4,700 profiles of scientists on OpenAlex, CrossRef, and other bibliometric sources. We used several indicators to determine the eligibility of each scientist. These included the scientist's publications, awards, and achievements. To be included in our ranking, a scientist's D-index threshold was established at 40 if the majority of their publications were in the field of microbiology.

  • Even though U.S.-based scientists dominate the list, the top 1% are well represented by other countries. Only 4 out of 10 come from the U.S.
  • In our 2024 report, the National Institutes of Health is the institution that has the most number of scientists in the ranking. It has 31 scientists affiliated with that institution.
  • Didier Raoult from the Aix-Marseille University, France, has the top spot in the ranking with a D-index of 199.
  • Universities and institutions from North America, Europe, and Asia make up the top 20 universities and institutions leading research activities in microbiology.
  • The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 172.1 against an average of 95.03 for all scientists included in the ranking.

BEST MICROBIOLOGY SCIENTISTS RANKING

Countries with the highest number of leading microbiology scientists

Scientists from the United States make up 47.6% of our ranking, or 476 scientists, up by 22 scientists compared to 2023. Four out of 10 scientists in the top 1% included in our report are affiliated with U.S.-based universities and institutions.

The United Kingdom ranks second with 93 scientists, a spot it kept from last year, while France, which hosts the top scientist, maintained its third ranking with 56 scientists. Germany is a close 4th with 55 scientists, followed by the Netherlands with 51 scientists.

Japan climbed to the 6th spot with 30 scientists from its 8th position in 2023. Australia, which used to occupy the sixth position, is now at rank 7 with 28 scientists, followed by Canada with 25 scientists.

Spain and Switzerland round up the top 10 with 25 scientists each.

Please note that the country associated with a scientist is based on their affiliated research institution according to MAG, not on their actual nationality.

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists

In the 2024 edition of our report, the National Institutes of Health is the top institution with the most number of scientists in microbiology. NIH has 31 scientists.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention comes in second place with 24 scientists in our ranking, with four more scientists than the previous year’s total.

Harvard University takes the third spot with 15 scientists. Johns Hopkins University and Institut Pasteur are tied at number four on the top 10 institutions, with 14 scientists each.

The rest of the top 10 institutions represent North America, Europe, and Asia. These include the University of Oxford, the University of Washington, the University of Hong Kong, Stanford University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In Europe, Professor Didier Raoult from Aix-Marseille University, France, is the top scientist in the region. He is also the no.1 in the world with a D-index of 199.

In North America, Professor Gabriel Núñez from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, United States, leads microbiology scientists in the region. He is also the fourth top scientist in our report, with a D-index of 173.

Professor Kwok-Yung Yuen from the University of Hong Kong, China, ranks first in the Asian region and 8th in the world. Professor Yuen has a D-index of 164.

In Oceania, Professor Edward C. Holmes from the University of Sydney, Australia, is the leading scientist. He ranks ninth in our report with a D-index of 163.

Professor Paul D. van Helden, who is affiliated with Stellenbosch University, South Africa, is the first in Africa with a world ranking of 429.

Professor Jean Swings from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is the highest-ranking scientist from South America. He has a D-index of 116.

The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 172.1 against an average of 95.03 for all scientists included in the ranking.

The scholar with the lowest index value who made it to the ranking in 2024 has a D-index of 77.

The average number of published articles for the top 1% of scientists in the ranking is 1065.5 against an average of 388.62 for all scholars.

The average number of citations for the top 1% of scientists is 136,451.4 against an average of 37,252.29 for all scholars.
