On April 15, 2024, Research.com released the 3rd edition of the annual study recognizing the greatest scientists in materials science. This report of the leading scientists helps to raise the worldwide visibility of academics and researchers who make substantial contributions to materials science.

Furthermore, we expect that the rankings will make it easier for other researchers, decision-makers, and companies to find scientists studying specific themes in this area. Everyone may examine the top materials scientists from various countries, as well as university institutions and research facilities.

For the 2024 report, our research team reviewed nearly 11,000 scientist profiles obtained from various bibliometric data sources. To be considered for the ranking, we used a variety of metrics and criteria. For example, The D-index threshold for approving a scholar was 40 if most of their publications were in materials science. A scientist's proportion of contributions made within the discipline, plus their awards and achievements, was also considered.

  • The other leading countries in this year's top 5 are China (254 scientists), Germany (64 scientists), the United Kingdom (45 scientists), and Japan (38 scientists).
  • Seven out of 10 scientists in the top 1% are from the United States, with the other countries represented being Switzerland, China, and Germany.
  • Zhong Lin Wang from Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States still holds the top position in the 2024 report. Professor Wang has a D-index of 286.
  • In the 2024 edition of our report, the Chinese Academy of Sciences is once again the leading institution. It has 41 scientists included in the ranking.
  • The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 245 against an average of 114 for all scientists included in the ranking.

BEST MATERIALS SCIENCE SCIENTISTS RANKING

Countries with the highest number of leading materials science scientists

The United States has the most number of leading materials scientists in 2024. The total number of scientists remained the same as the previous year at 369.

China comes in at number two with 254 scientists, gaining 19 more scientists in 2024. On the third spot is Germany, with a drop in its total number of scientists from 67 to 64 but still enough for it to have kept the second spot.

The fourth and fifth positions are similar to last year, with the United Kingdom and Japan occupying these spots with 45 and 38 scientists, respectively. Both countries saw a decrease in their total number of scientists in the 2024 ranking but still kept their previous rankings in 2023.

The other leading countries in the top 10 are Australia (37 scientists), Singapore (35 scientists), South Korea (24 scientists), Canada (18 scientists), and Switzerland (15 scientists).

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists

The institution with the most number of materials scientists in 2024 is the Chinese Academy of Sciences in China. It has 41 scientists, which is enough to maintain its top ranking from the previous year. However, its total number of scientists decreased from 45 last year.

Meanwhile, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) replaced Tsinghua University as the top 2 institution in 2024. Based in the United States, this research university has 24 scientists affiliated with the institution this year. Tsinghua University ranks third also with 24 scientists.

The University of California-Santa Barbara ranks fourth with 20 scientists followed by the National University of Singapore with 18 scientists.

Other leading universities in the list are Northwestern University (17 scientists), Nanyang Technological University (15 scientists), City University of Hong Kong (14 scientists), the University of Science and Technology of China (14 scientists), and the Georgia Institute of Technology (13 scientists).

Ten out of the top 20 institutions are based in the United States with 5 institutions based in China, 2 in Singapore (National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University), and one each from Germany (Max Planck Society), the United Kingdom (University of Cambridge), and Switzerland (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne).

In Europe, Professor Michael Gratzel affiliated with the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland is ranked first in the region and second globally, with a D-index of 282.

In Asia, Professor Jiaguo Yu from the China University of Geosciences, China leads other scientists in the region. Professor Yu's D-index is 213, and he ranks 8th in our report.

Professor Shi-Zhang Qiao from the University of Adelaide, Australia is the top scientist in Oceania. He ranks 46th in our report and has a D-index of 168.

Professor Ado Jorio from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil is the highest-ranking scientist from South America with a D-index of 98.

The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 245 against an average of 114 for all scientists included in the ranking.

The scholar with the lowest index value who made it to the ranking in 2023 has a D-index of 68.

The average number of published articles for the top 1% of scientists in the ranking is 1377.3 against an average of 675.78 for all ranking scholars.

The average number of citations for the top 1% of scientists is 260,412.2 against an average of 58,685.74 for all ranking scholars.
