On May 17, 2023, Research.com released the second edition of our list of best law scholars. For this edition of the report, our research team has decided to split Law and Political Science into separate rankings. Our aim for this top scholar list remains unchanged: to increase the visibility of leading researchers and academics in the field of law and contribute to improving the efficiency of networking with fellow researchers online.
Moreover, our report helps make it easier for organizations, educational institutions, and other interested parties to search for professionals and academics in the field of law. Thus, our list can be an excellent resource that connects experts in law to organizations, businesses, and individuals with the same academic interests or research projects.
In compiling the 2023 edition of the list, our team reviewed nearly 400 profiles on OpenAlex, CrossRef, and other bibliometric sources. We evaluated each scholar's professional background and applied multiple criteria to determine their ranking eligibility.
To qualify for inclusion in our ranking, scholars who primarily publish in law must have a D-index score of at least 40. The ranking criteria consider the D-index score, the proportion of contributions made in the relevant discipline, and the scholar's awards and accomplishments.

Countries with the highest number of leading law scholars
The United States is the country with the most number of scholars leading in the field of law. There are a total of 18 scholars included in our report who are affiliated with institutions in the U.S.
The United Kingdom ranks second with 53 scholars, followed by Canada, Australia, and Netherlands with 14, 10, and 7 scholars, respectively.
The top 6 to 10 countries are Germany (5 scholars), Italy (4), Israel (2), Switzerland (2), and Denmark (2).

In the 2023 edition of our report, Harvard University is the leading institution with 18 scholars. It is also one of the most popular institutions for legal studies and is a consistent top institution in our ranking.
Ranking second is Yale University and New York University, with 16 scholars each.
In the third spot is Arizona State University, which has 12 scholars. It is followed by the University of California, Berkeley, with 12 scholars, and Columbia University, 11 scholars.
