On November 23, 2023, Research.com released the 2nd edition of the annual ranking of the best scientists in the world. The purpose of this list of distinguished scholars from around the globe is to enhance the recognition and dissemination of the significant scholarly endeavors undertaken by those who occupy prominent positions in the field of science.

It is our hope that this will serve as a source of inspiration for scholars, decision-makers, and entrepreneurs worldwide, encouraging them to explore the directions pursued by esteemed specialists in their respective fields. This ranking presents a valuable opportunity for individuals to acquire knowledge regarding prominent authorities in many fields of research, spanning diverse nations, universities, and research institutes.

For the 2023 edition of the ranking, more than 166,880 scientist profiles have been examined with several indicators and metrics reviewed in order to consider each scientist’s inclusion in the ranking.

The key findings from the world's best scientists ranking

  • The best scientist in the world is Walter C. Willett from Harvard University with an h-index of 385.
  • 9 out of 10 best scientists on the list work in the United States.
  • Scientists working in the US dominate the list with 612 scholars included in 2023 (61.2% of the entire ranking).
  • The other countries with leading positions in the ranking are the UK (101 scientists or 10.1%), and Germany (48 scientists or 4.8%).

Countries with the highest number of leading scientists

Scientists from the United States dominate the list with 612 scholars included in 2023 which represents 61.2% of the whole ranking. This, despite the country having fewer top scientists than in 2022 (617 scientists). 9 out of 10 best scientists on our list are working in the United States.

The United Kingdom ranks second with 101 scientists, up from 95 last year. Meantime, the third spot was taken by Germany, which currently has 48 ranking scientists, nine more scientists compared with last year.

The other leading countries are Australia, Italy, and China, each with 24 scientists, Canada with 20 scientists, France with 19 scientists, Japan with 18 scientists, and the Netherlands with 17 scientists.

From its 9th rank in 2022, Italy climbed to the 5th position in 2023 with 24 scientists. The Netherlands also made it to the top 10 replacing Sweden with 17 scientists.

When research agencies commit to robust and equitable scientific practices, communities reap the greatest benefits. The work of the best scientists, however, often faces multiple barriers that prevent science-based decision-making. One of these barriers is censorship. Although the majority of scientists did not see any instances of censorship, 26% acknowledged being requested to exclude politically sensitive terminology from their scientific outputs, 16% described instances where they were instructed or requested to refrain from engaging in research related to certain scientific subjects that had the potential to be perceived as politically controversial, and 23% reported that they often engage in self-censorship.

Workforce reduction is another factor that affects the effectiveness of research agencies in fulfilling their mandates. Among scientists, 62% reported experiencing burnout in the last two years, while 70% of those who reported burnout said it was due to limited staff capacity.

Still, these countries that made it to the top 10 in the ranking have provided an environment conducive to researchers so they can conduct their research and carry out their mission-driven work.

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists

As with last year, the top three institutions with the highest number of top scientists remain the same. Harvard University tops the list with 65 scientists associated with the esteemed institution. The US National Institutes of Health holds the second position with a total of 22 scientists, while MIT occupies the third position with 21 scientists.

American universities and institutions constitute 80% of the top 10 leading institutions with the other two universities, the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, representing the United Kingdom.

9 out of 10 institutions affiliated with the best scientists list are based in the USA. The only institution from the top 10 based outside the US is Osaka University which holds the 7th spot in the top 10.

For the 2023 top 10 institutions, the California Institute of Technology as well as the University of California San Francisco made it to the top 10, each with 13 scientists. The University of Oxford climbed to the 7th spot with 15 scientists from its previous 10th ranking in 2022.

Research universities play a crucial role in cultivating research discipline among scholars. These institutions provide ways to improve pathways to graduate education, take advantage of opportunities to increase student diversity and realign doctoral education for the careers new doctorates will follow. Based on the National Academy of Inventors annual list of the top 100 universities granted utility patents, the University of California system acquired the highest number of patents in 2022 at 570. H-index ranking – leaders, averages, and distribution

For North America, Professor Walter C. Willett from Harvard University is on top of the list with a world ranking of no. 1 as well. His h-index is 385.

Professor Michael Gratzel from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland leads the top list in Europe with an h-index of 279.

For Asia, Professor Shizuo Akira from Osaka University, Japan is ranked first in the region, with an H-index of 297. He is also listed 7th in the world ranking.

For Oceania, Professor Nicholas G. Martin from the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Australia ranks 1st on our list of leading scientists in that region. He is also listed as no. 99 in the world ranking.

Professor Dan J. Stein from the University of Cape Town, South Africa ranks as the top scientist in Africa, with a world ranking of 561.

Professor Maria-Teresa Dova from the National University of La Plata, Argentina is the highest-ranking scientist from South America with a world ranking of 560.

The average H-index for the top 1% of scientists is 311 against an average of 181 for the top 1000 scientists included in the ranking.

The scholar with the lowest index value who made it to the ranking in 2023 has an H-index of 155.

The average number of published articles for the top 1% of scientists in the ranking is 1881 against an average of 1117 for the top 1000 scholars.

The average number of citations for the top 1% of scientists is 433,775 against an average of 160,906 for the top 1000 scholars. The highest cited scientist is Eric S. Lander from the Office of Science and Technology Policy, United States with 601,301 citations.
