On May 20, 2024, Research.com released the 3rd edition of our annual report on the best scientists in the field of molecular biology. In this report, we provide a list that aims to increase awareness and recognition within the academic world of the significant research accomplishments of top researchers and scientists in the field.

As we rank the best scientists in molecular biology, we hope to motivate researchers, decision-makers, and entrepreneurs worldwide to delve into the different research topics that molecular biology scientists are exploring. Our main intention is to provide access to more information on the top experts in diverse molecular biology research domains across nations, universities, and research institutions.

To compile the scientists for our 2024 report, our research team inspected more than 2,200 profiles of scientists on OpenAlex, CrossRef, and other bibliometric sources. We used several metrics to determine the eligibility of each scientist. These included the scientist's publications, awards, and achievements. To be included in our ranking, a scientist's D-index threshold was established at 40 if the majority of their publications were in the field of molecular biology.

  • Despite the large proportion of scientists from the United States, other nations are sufficiently represented in the top 1%. Only six out of ten are based in the United States.
  • The National Institutes of Health ranks highest in terms of scientists in our 2024 study with 39 scientists connected to that institution.
  • With a D-index of 258, Michael Karin of the University of California, San Diego in the United States is ranked as the top scientist in molecular biology.
  • Universities and institutions from North America, Europe, and Asia make up the top 20 universities and institutions leading research activities in the field of molecular biology.
  • The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 228.2 against an average of 95.03 for all scientists included in the ranking.

Japan ranks second with 83 scientists, a spot it kept from last year, while the United Kingdom maintained its 3rd ranking with 79 scientists. Germany is a close 4th with 74 scientists, followed by Canada, which advanced to the 5th spot from the 7th spot, with 29 scientists.

France remains at spot 6 with 28 scientists. Australia, which was previously ranked fifth, is now 7th with 28 scientists, followed by the Netherlands with 21. scientists.

Sweden and Switzerland complete the top ten with 17 and 16 scientists, respectively.

Please note that the country associated with a scientist is based on their affiliated research institution according to MAG, not on their actual nationality.

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists

In the 2024 edition of our report, the National Institutes of Health is the top institution with the most number of scientists in molecular biology. NIH has 39 scientists.

With 3624 scientists featured in our ranking, Harvard University secures the second place.

Stanford University, with nineteen scientists, comes in third. With 15 scientists each, MIT and the University of California-San Francisco hold the 5th and 6th place, respectively, among the top 10 institutions.

The rest of the top 10 institutions represent North America (University of California-Berkeley), Europe (Max Planck and the University of Cambridge), and Asia (Osaka University and Kyoto University).

D-index ranking-leaders, averages, and distribution

For North America, Professor Michael Karin of the University of California, San Diego, leads the list of best researchers with a D-index of 258. He is also the top researcher in the 2024 world ranking.

For Europe, Professor Pierre Chambon from Collège de France ranks first with a D-index of 250. In the 2024 world ranking, he is in the second spot.

Professor Kazuo Shinozaki of RIKEN in Japan secures the 15th spot in the world ranking and leads the list in Asia with a D-index of 194.

In Oceania, Professor Edward C. Holmes from the University of Sydney in Australia leads other molecular biology scientists in the region. Professor Holmes ranks 57th in our report, with a D-index of 148.

The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 228.2 against an average of 95.03 for all scientists included in the ranking.

The scholar with the lowest index value who made it to the ranking in 2024 has a D-index of 67.

The average number of published articles for the top 1% of scientists in the ranking is 866.9 against an average of 292.0 for all scholars.

The average number of citations for the top 1% of scientists is 223061.9 against an average of 41826.37 for all scholars.
